Samantha Joe's Ride
Tiny puppy surprise,
Little husky-shep with brown eyes,
Coat half black and snow white,
Whining and hungry into the night.
Learning to live in a human world.
Potty training, newspaper or outside,
Learning so quickly it's a reason for pride.
Tricks with a cookie up in the air,
Catch it still flipping with a doggy grinning stare.
Watch 'em, Sam!
Guarding the household or the car,
Not a person could get very far.
Just eight months and hit by a Beetle mobile,
I couldn't belive it was real.
Carried home in a sled with care by down cast honor guards.
Running around with a cast on your leg,
Never stopped being cute when you decided to beg,
Snitching Nono's hamburger in silent surprise,
It sure took awhile before he got wise!
Have a sip of coffee with Mom in the morning?
Bye-Bye are the magic words carefully said,
Tail wagging ready from backside to head!
Treed every kid up and down the street,
And for once, the dog catcher knew defeat.
How did a dog get so smart?
Heaven help us if you played frisbee!

Samantha Joe, or Sammy Joe, was the smartest dog I've ever seen. It was positively uncanny. It is one of the biggest shames that she never had pups, but who was to know when you fix 'em so young? I think everyone loved that dog! I wish sometimes that we could go back to places in time for a visit, relive some of the better moments. She passed from this world in 1982. May Dog Heaven give rides in cars.

Wow Dan! You've done it again. I don't know if it's the poem or your comment but you bought tears to my eyes. Loving my dog Sabre as I do I can imagine your dog so clearly. If we even mention the words car or drive to Sabre he almost does back flips with excitement. What a great poem! |
