Cold Red Home

I stand in the red-washed sunlight that seems watered down,
And the vista is scenes from a 21st century frontier town.
Conestogas of metal launched on columns of flame,
With hopes that this planet we are able to tame.

Mars is a cold place.

I see orange rock strewn hills, mounds of red desert covering homes.
Lights in the darkness in the frigid night, mining for water under stone domes.
Space-suited working men and women face the vacuum every day.
Here we will change this world in previously unfathomed ways.

The light gravity makes you feel like superman.

The all-pervasive redness here looking so rusty and bleak,
Hides the minerals and treasures we so energetically seek
Building homes sheltered deep underground,
Greenhouses in hobbit caves lighted by fusion unwound.

Faces gather 'round the light of a screen-faced golem.

Searching for answers and new ways to exist,
Adding new knowledge to the treasure list.
Someday, we'll see fields of greensward begin to cover an ocean of rust.
But that joy is for great-great-grandchildren, now there's red dust.

We're building a new world.

Just a taste, a wisp of vision of what will be.
