The Wisdom of Three Years

When I was a child of three,
I remember things I'd see.
Exhaust trails across the sky,
I had no idea what or why.

So I asked.

Another child playing with me,
Looked up speculatively.
Three year olds answer capers,
She said they were Skyscrapers.

See how they scrape the blue right from the sky?

What three year old knows a jumbo jet,
When the ground is so close as yet?
All life is made of magic things,
And all is new that tomorrow brings.

Is the sky cleaned up yet?

Author's Comments

I remember the incident very well. It was only the next year that the skyscrapers  were resolved into jet planes, but I still thought of them with that name for a few more. Only later did I discover the inventions of Chicago.
